Welcome to Scottish Scran!

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to learn a little more about us.

Let us introduce ourselves.

We are Phil and Sonja, and we’ve been producing Scottish recipes since Scottish Scran began back in 2020. One couple’s interest in making Stovies has snowballed into the website you’ve happily discovered.

While you’re here, we’d love to tell you a little more about our journey and how a Kiwi woman and an English bloke found themselves creating recipe after recipe of traditional Scottish Scran.

Let’s start at the beginning.

In all honesty, our interest in Scottish food significantly increased when our thriving travel website suddenly stopped thriving, as it did for many others, and we had a lot of time on our hands.

We looked inward, and despite neither of us being from Scotland, we decided to spend some time learning more about traditional Scottish recipes to teach our sons more about Scottish food. We started by raiding our own family recipe books and discovered every kitchen has its own take on the classics!

From this bumpy start, we have moved forward, creating a popular website full of tried-and-tested Scottish recipes and a large community of people who love sharing their knowledge and passion for Scottish food.

Our website alone reached 3 million people in 2023, crazy right?

So, who are we?

Apart from being parents, we’re both keen home cooks and share a passion for food. Phil is English and has a background in digital marketing. Sonja is a professional travel writer and content creator from New Zealand.

We’ve been living in and exploring Scotland for many years, developing a keen interest in all it offers. So much so that we ended up calling it home and were married here back in 2017!
Since then, we’ve had two boys and moved to the Isle of Skye. Scotland has become part of both our family and working life, and we feel very fortunate to be here.

What’s Scottish Scran all about then?

Today, Scottish Scran showcases a broad range of dishes, recipes, bakes, and ingredients. There are classics such as Shortbread and Scones, as well as lesser-known recipes for Ecclefechan Tarts and Rumbledethumps.

You’ll find a mix of family recipes and our own adaptations of classic dishes, which we tried and tested on our family so you can make them for yours.
We’ve also enjoyed adding a twist or two to some tasty treats and sneaking in some recipes from further afield when nobody is looking!

That brings us to where we are now. Over four years on, one child has become two, Skye has become home, and we’re much further down the line than when we started. We have a lot less time these days, but a lot of our working time is spent on all things Scottish Scran.

Ironically, our food website, which started because another business lost its relevance, now puts bread on the table for our family, and we have you to thank for that.

By you, we mean everyone who has followed our journey or even just popped in for a recipe once and has yet to return.

Thank you. You’ve really helped us.
