Welcome to Scottish Scran!
What started as one couple’s interest in making Tablet has snowballed quite quickly into the website you’ve discovered.
Let us introduce ourselves.
We’re Phil and Sonja. We created Scottish Scran to learn more about Scottish cuisine so we could then go on to teach our sons, who were both born in Scotland, more of the foods their friends will be growing up with and enjoying.

We’re both keen home bakers and both share a real passion for food generally. Phil is English, with a background in hospitality and digital marketing and Sonja is a professional travel writer and content creator from New Zealand.
We have explored Scotland for many years, developing a keen interest in all it offers. So much so we now call it our home and were married here!
We’ve realised, since having our son, that we needed to learn even more about the wonderful foods and produce that originates from Scotland. We started by raiding our own family recipe books and discovered every kitchen has its own take on the classics!
What’s Scottish Scran all about then?
Scottish Scran showcases a broad spread of different dishes, bakes and ingredients. There are classics such as Shortbread and Scones to lesser-known recipes for Tablet and Cullen Skink.
You’ll find a mix of our own family recipes and our own adaptations put together to create dishes that our family will be serving up for the foreseeable future.
We’ve also tried adding a twist or two to some tasty treats. We really hope you like them!
We’re not professional bakers or chefs by any stretch, so we’ll showcase our failures and how we moved past them and our successes!
It will be an interesting journey, to say the least.
We’re also excited to learn a little more about each food and, as our working life is based in travel, we’ll be exploring the different areas of Scotland that the dishes come from and hopefully adding a little of the story of the recipe to each post.
Join us on our journey.
We can’t wait to hear what you think – follow us on social media and share your thoughts and your own recipes with us. We won’t have tried most of these dishes so we’re keen to learn from you as well.
